ok, what books are people reading, and are they nerdy enough to meet muster?

Now thats some nerdy shit.

I'm reading Terry Prachet's new children's book... Only You can Save Mankind.

Is that nerdy or just geeky? I can never tell.

I work in a bookstore! Surely that counts for something.... Umm...

judges say: maybe not riot like, but reading children's novels as an adult is definetly an established sub-culture within the larger realm of nerdom. and working at a bookstore always earns you points.

The real question is...are you doing it to learn something or are you doing it to impress/commune your friends? And is "or" an "and" in this case?

I guess technically "to learn something," as in, is it worth other people's time to read it or should I recommend something else?

Finished it today, BTW... comes off a bit preachy but it's a message the human race would do well to learn in the face of current events.

Now I'm reading Magic and Mystery in Tibet by Alexandra David-Neel. I have this minor addiction to anthropological books written around the turn of last century.

I'm reading a book called "Decypher" which is a hardcore SF book about the world coming to an end in 2012...

I have heard that the current cycle of the Mayan calendar ends on that year.
      Not nerdy....
But the fact that I own a book on how to read Mayan hieroglyphs is.
I might look that book up.

This is a great book for those who like thinking outside of the box and who are willing to question their own perceptions:

The View from the Oak: The private worlds of other creatures, by Judith and Herbert Kohl.

Its an ethology book. Ethology is the study of the way animals perceive their environment. It is an, "exploration of the strange but marvelous ways in which living creatures experience space, time, and communicate with each other."

Oh, and its a children's book.

I am SO not nerdy lately - recent books include the latest Harry Potter, Probability Space by Nancy Kress, and The Wild Machines: The book of Ash, #2 by Mary Gentle. So, fantasy, scifi, fantasy/scifi.

On the other hand, my recent reading has been curtailed by other stuff, like setting up MySQL databases and work.

Wicked Cool Shell Scripts by Dave Taylor. I was nerdy enough to salavate at the juxapostion of the words "wicked cool" to the words "shell scripts".

Well it's not a book but perhaps the c't magazin für computer technik piece on Suchmaschinenoptimierung counts? I mean who doesn't want to know more about Krauts optimizing search engines?

I'm reading the History of Mathematics by Howard Eves. I'm reading it for a class, but I took the class by choice, so...

I'm reading Foundation's edge, the souls of black folk, che cguevarra- a revolutionary life, and cultivating female sexual energy. I figure I should at least get a point for a four book combo.

I'm a nerdy white guy reading "Look Out Whitey! Black Power Gon' Get Yo Mama", by Julius Lester, on the 22 Fillmore. I'm nerdy enough that I keep the cover out of view so people don't start weird conversations about it.

When I saw the thread, the first books to come to mind were all the Higher Mathematics books Dover puts out.
I'm not a math nerdette, so I've resisted those.

I don't have anything right now in the nerd department, just some Geek stuff.

I do want to get a hold of some old folklore material, brush up on some Mayan for a visit to some local museums, and learn some Greek to help my intuitive knowledge of medical terms, but right now I'm taking it easy.

I'm reading the new cosmic onion; I hear it's an update to the classic The Cosmic Onion. Hopefully it will be a light intro to the explaination of dark matter. If there is a better book for that, please post it :o)

What about Red Mars by Kim Stanley Robinson. At over 570 pages, it's probably the longest book I've ever read!
